เมื่ออุกกาบาตลูกใหญ่กำลังจะชนโลก “จอห์น แกริตี้” (เจอราด บัตเลอร์) และครอบครัวได้รับเลือกให้หลบภัยในศูนย์พักพิง แต่เขาต้องพบกับความโกลาหลจนมีเหตุให้พลัดพรากจากครอบครัว จอห์นจึงทำทุกวิถีทางเพื่อตามหาภรรยาและลูกซึ่งป่วยด้วยโรคเบาหวาน ก่อนโลกจะแตกดับลงต่อหน้า

พลอตของ GREENLAND กล่าวถึงเหตุการณ์อุกกาบาตชื่อคลาร์กที่มุ่งตรงมาถล่มโลก แต่รัฐบาลกลับสามารถช่วยเหลือคนได้เพียงหยิบมือจึงเลือกคนในสาขาอาชีพที่จำเป็นต่อมนุษย์ได้เดินทางสู่ที่หลบภัยโดยหนึ่งในนั้นได้แก่ครอบครัวแกริตี้ประกอบด้วย จอห์น (เจอร์ราด บัตเลอร์) พ่อบ้านวิศวกรโครงสร้างที่กำลังมีปัญหาระหองระแหงกับ เอลลี (โมเรนา บัคคาริน) ภรรยาสาวสวย ซึ่ง เนธาน (โรเจอร์ เดล ฟลอยด์) ลูกชายของพวกเขาที่เกิดมาเป็นโรคเบาหวานแต่กำเนิด

โดยเฉพาะการเปรียบเปรยระบบการคัดเลือกผู้รอดชีวิตของรัฐบาลที่แทบไม่ต่างจากพระเจ้า โดยหนังก็สามารถสร้างซีนสะเทือนอารมณ์ได้ตั้งแต่ซีนแรก ๆ อย่างการปฏิเสธรับเด็กสาวข้างบ้านแม้จะเป็นเพื่อนของลูกชายเพียงเพราะกฎห้ามนำคนอื่นเข้าไปในสนามบิน ซึ่งลำพังซีนนี้ซีนเดียวเราก็สัมผัสได้แล้วว่าตัวหนังจะต้องมีอะไรมาช็อกความรู้สึกคนดูแน่ ๆ

และมันก็มาตามนัดจริง ๆ หนังมีฉากที่โชว์สัญชาตญานดิบของมนุษย์ที่ดูโหดร้ายหลายฉากทั้งกราดยิงในร้านยา ฉากคนแปลกหน้าที่พร้อมห้ำหั่นกันให้ได้สิทธิเดินทางไปยังที่ปลอดภัยโดยไม่สนหลักการมนุษยธรรมใด ๆ เลยทำให้มันโดดเด่นออกมาจากหนังภัยพิบัติโลกแตกเรื่องอื่นที่พยายามเน้นฉากโชว์สเปเชียลเอฟเฟกต์อลังการแต่ตรงข้าม GREENLAND สามารถเล่าเรื่องในเชิงหนังเอาชีวิตรอดได้อย่างระทึกใจและกระแทกความรู้สึกคนดูได้อย่างไม่น่าเชื่อ

และทีละน้อยมันก็ค่อย ๆ ปรับสู่สารด้านศาสนาอย่างไม่ต้องสงสัย ที่เห็นได้ชัดคือหนังพยายามเน้นป้าย โบสถ์บัพติศมา (Babtism) ซึ่งในทางสัญลักษณ์แล้วก็เดาได้ไม่ยากว่ามันจะนำไปสู่การพูดเรื่องการล้างบาปแน่นอน โดยเฉพาะกรณีของจอห์นที่แบกความผิดบาปต่อครอบครัวเป็นส่วนผลักดันให้เขาพาเมียและลูกตัวเองออกเดินทางไปในที่ปลอดภัยให้จงได้

ซึ่งก็มีส่วนคล้ายเรื่องราวในพระคัมภีร์อย่างเรือของโนอาห์ (Noah’s Ark) ไม่น้อยเลยทีเดียว เพียงแต่เปลี่ยนจากเหล่าสรรพสัตว์และครอบครัวมาเป็นมนุษย์และที่สำคัญสารด้านศาสนายังไปไกลถึงขั้นให้เกิดการเปลี่ยนแปลงด้านคาแรกเตอร์ของจอห์นที่ตอนแรกเขาต้องเผชิญอุปสรรคนานาจากความเห็นแก่ตัวจนในตอนท้ายเรื่องเหมือนเขาพยายามพิสูจน์ตนเองให้พระเจ้าเห็นไม่น้อยกับความพยายามช่วยเหลือเพื่อนมนุษย์หลังเป็นพยานเหตุการณ์สะเทือนใจตอนกลางเรื่อง

และแม้หนังจะมีฉากบังคับให้ต้องขายสเปเชียลเอฟเฟกต์ตระการตาแต่ GREENLAND ก็เลือก “โชว์” อย่างพอดี โดยนอกจากฉากอุกกาบาตพุ่งชนโลกจนเกิดความวินาศสันตะโรแล้ว มันยังทำหน้าที่รองรับเรื่องราวที่เล่าผ่านท้องฟ้าลุกเป็นไฟสร้างบรรยากาศวันสิ้นโลกให้เราได้ตามตัวละครไปลุ้นกับการเอาชีวิตรอดของเขาแทนซึ่งถือเป็นความโชคดีที่หนังก็ได้นักแสดงที่ดีเสียด้วย

แม้เจอร์ราด บัตเลอร์จะสร้างชื่อในฐานะดาราหนังบู๊แต่สำหรับ GREENLAND ผู้กำกับอย่าง ริก โรมัน วาฟ ที่พ่วงกันมาจาก Angle Has Fallen (2019) กลับให้โอกาสเขาในการเติมความเป็นมนุษย์ทั้งความเป็นพ่อและสามีลงไปในตัวละครส่วน โมเรนา บัคคาริน นอกจากความสวยที่มองเพลินเป็นทุนเดิมฝีมือการแสดงของเธอก็ไม่ได้ดีน้อยไปกว่ารูปร่างหน้าตาเราสัมผัสได้ถึงความเป็นแม่ที่อยู่ในทุกซีนจนเราอดลุ้นตามไม่ได้

The plot of GREENLAND revolves around a meteor named Clark heading towards Earth. But the government is able to help only a handful of people, choosing people in professions that are essential to humanity. One of them is the Garity family, consisting of John (Gerard Butler), a structural engineer butler. Who are having a feud with Ellie (Morena Baccarin), his beautiful wife, whose son Nathan (Roger Del Floyd) was born with diabetes.

But on their way to Greenland, a government hideout, they face countless obstacles, including people dissatisfied with their lack of choice. Or gangsters start to rob items from shops until the country enters a complete chaos. And as they try to survive, they begin to see the raw human instincts to do whatever it takes to survive.

First of all, it must be said that GREENLAND may not have a very different narrative image from other cataclysmic worlds. There was also a scene of meteorites hitting the city. The shop scene was robbed and burned. Including the human character who is selfish to the force scene like a stressful situation until the protagonist has to run out to give his child diabetes pills even when the plane is about to leave But have to admire Rick Roman Waf who still tries to find a new angle to tell the story to be fun and incredibly exciting with the protagonist

Especially the analogy of the government’s survivor selection system that is almost indistinguishable from God. In which the movie was able to create emotional scenes from the very beginning, such as refusing to accept the girl next door despite being a friend of the son just because the rules prohibit bringing other people into the airport. Which alone, in this one scene, we can already feel that the movie must have something that will definitely shock the audience.

And it really came on schedule. The scene of strangers vying for the right to get to safety with no regard for humanitarian principles sets it apart from other post-apocalyptic disaster movies that attempt to highlight special effects scenes. Magnificent, but opposite GREENLAND, able to tell stories in terms of survival movies that are thrilling and incredibly shocking to the audience’s feelings.

And little by little it undoubtedly turned into a religious message. The movie is clearly trying to highlight the label. Church of Baptism (Babtism), which is symbolic and it is not difficult to guess that it will definitely lead to talk about baptism. Especially in the case of John, who bears the guilt of his family as a force for him to take his wife and children to a safe place.

Which has a lot in common with the biblical story Noah’s Ark (Noah’s Ark) quite a bit. Just change from all beings and families to humans, and most importantly, religious substances are too far to the level of change in the character of John, who at first he had to face various obstacles from selfishness. Until the end of the story, it seems like he tries to prove himself to God, not least with his efforts to help people after witnessing the heartbreaking events in the middle of the story.

And although the movie has a scene forcing the sale of spectacular special effects, GREENLAND chooses to “show” just right. It also serves to support the story that is told through the sky, creating a fire, creating an atmosphere at the end of the world for us to follow the characters to win his survival instead, which is considered a good movie.

While Gerard Butler has made his name as an action movie star, GREENLAND director Rick Roman Waugh’s trailer for Angle Has Fallen (2019) gives him a chance to recreate his humanity as a father. And the husband into the character, Morena Baccarin, besides the beauty that is enjoyed as the original capital, her acting skills are no less good than her appearance, we can feel the motherhood in every scene.
